LAPT – Latin American Poker Tour

The most recently held of the major poker tours in the world is the Latin American Poker Tour. It is a series of tournaments held throughout Central and South America. It is sponsored by PokerStars. It has grown every year of its existence. The first year, 2008, had three events. The next year had 5 events. The most recent year, 2010, saw a total of seven events held. This included the first season-ending championship in the tour’s history, the Grand Final held at the City Center Casino in Rosario, Argentina.

The first season of the Latin American Poker Tour had the inaugural event of the tour in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. It was a two-day tournament that attracted 314 players to pay the $2,500 buy-in. The winner, Julien Nuijten, took home nearly $223,000. The other two events of 2008 were also $2,500 buy-ins, one in Punta del Este, Uruguay and one in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The second season had events in Costa Rica, Mexico, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. The most lucrative of these events was held at the Casino Central in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The buy-in was $5,000 and 291 players entered the tournament. The winner, Dominik Nitsche of Germany, won more than $380,000.

The third season of the Latin American Poker Tour hosted events in Costa Rica, Bahamas, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Brazil and Argentina. This year featured the first $10,000 buy-in tournament on the tour, held in the Bahamas. The winner, Poorya Nazari, beat out 745 other competitors to take home the $3 million prize for first place. The season-ending championship in Argentina, the Latin American Poker Tour Grand Final, had a total of eleven tournaments. The winner of the main event, Martin Sansour of Peru, qualified to the tournament through an online satellite on PokerStars. He took home more than $330,000 for his victory, and became the first-ever Latin American Poker Tour Grand Final Champion.
