Explaining Poker Tournaments

Poker tournaments have gained immensely in popularity over the last few years. There are several reasons for this explosion; the television coverage, the growth of Internet poker and Chris Moneymaker’s amazing victory in the World Series of Poker 2003. Anyone who gets lucky can win big without risking a lot and that fact has drawn huge crowds to the tournament tables.

However, in the long run skill is a deciding factor in poker tournaments. It’s not a coincidence that the same people place high in the big tournaments year after year. For example, the late Stu Ungar became World Champion three times and the legendary Johnny Chan has won back-to-back titles. As mentioned, you need luck to win a tournament but an effective strategy and solid poker skills are even more important.
